about

8 Remedios fuses Colombian cumbia, NuYoRican boogaloo, Cuban son and funky reggae with a healthy dose of electronica, clav-driven grooves, soulful horns, percussion and Sally Ford’s trademark soaring vocals in Spanish and English. The CD features seven original tunes plus a tribute to the Queen of Afro-Colombian cumbia, Toto La Momposina, in a reworking of her classic rumba, El Pescador (The Fisherman).

The regular operating team of Sally Ford, Patrick Cronin, Michael Havir, Catherine McQuade, David Joseph and Peter Slipper bring to Dr Hernández a collective legacy of working with bands such as the ARIA-winning Melbourne Ska Orchestra, the Spaghetti Western Orchestra, Texicali Rose, Yothu Yindi, Deckchairs Overboard, Sally Ford and the Pachuco Playboys, Joe Camilleri’s Black Sorrows, The Public Opinion Afro Orchestra, Frank Yamma, Skazz and Batacuda. For the album they joined by Dave Evans on accordion and master percussionist Javier Fredes.

Sally Ford’s and Patrick Cronin's original tunes - Buscando Perlas (Diving For Pearls), It’s the Little Things and Volando Sin Avión (Flying Without Wings) - offer some small remedios for troubled times. Mansouria is inspired by a memorable experience in a Moroccan restaurant, not necessarily a remedy but muy buena para la salud! The sonic tonic continues with Dig This Boogaloo! in a heavy nod to 60s latin soul while Catherine McQuade takes the vocal and songwriting lead on Caliente (Hot!) to extol the physical and psychological benefits of hitting the dance floor. Darling,Mi Querido written by David Joseph rounds out the album, with Sally’s lyric a lament for one of Australia's most important water systems.
La música might not always be la cura, but Dr Hernández offers 8 Remedios that might help dull the pain!

Sally Ford says … “8 Remedios is strongly influenced by the collective history the musicians of Dr Hernández bring to the album. I first encountered cumbia, son and boogaloo on my first trips to North, Central and South America in the 1970s and it's been central to my music-making ever since. Michael Havir and Dave Joseph bring their extensive backgrounds in ska, reggae and traditional African styles; Catherine McQuade brings a pop sensibility as well as her own background in playing latin genres. Trumpeter and producer Patrick Cronin brings his penchant for lush soundscapes and quirky exotica; soloists and guests Peter Slipper, Javier Fredes and Dave Evans add their own unique flavours to a recording that truly represents the international melting pot that is the Melbourne music scene. ¡Vamos a bailar! ¡Vamos a gozar!“
